Hatching Eggs

Hatching Eggs – ODDBALLS

I know, you’re seeing this thinking, what is an oddball, and why does this lady keep making up new names for hatching eggs and chickens? I can’t really answer the latter part, but here’s an explanation for the former:

Sometimes I hatch and hold onto chicks from random pairings just to see what they turn into. These are eggs from such pairings. Some of their parents are results of such pairings as well.

The hen “Pearl” is a random TSC bantam bin find. She’s probably some kind of bantam Easter Egger, since she lays light green eggs, but I really have zero faith in that guess. The roos she lives with are a Gray (Blue?) Silkie named “Gandalf” and a Black and Copper Satin feathered Silkie mix named “Krakatoa”. My bet is on Krakatoa being the pops but your guess is as good as mine.

I don’t actually know how big these chicks will be. The hen, is a cross between a full sized Olive Egger hen, and a BANTAM White Crested Blue Polish roo. She’s a medium size, somewhere between her parents’ sizes, but she lays a basic cream colored egg, unlike her mother.

The roo she’s with, “Goose” is another mix. His mother was a Splash Marans and his pop was Ayam Cemani. He too is somewhere between the stocky Marans build, and the gamey Cemani build. Goose’s dad Monte is also pictured.

This one irks me to post. Seriously.

This hen is MY DARKEST LAYING MARANS. Her egg is a high 7, low 8 on the chart (at least on top). The bottom is a bit lighter like maybe a 6/7. So why am I not over-the-moon, thrilled when that’s one of the more coveted eggs out there?

Because “PITA” decided to skip out on the Marans, and hop two pens over to hang out with a Blue Laced Lemon Wyandotte rooster. She did it twice – meaning two whole days she was being “contaminated”. Thanks to her crush, now I can’t sell her eggs as pure BCM, so I just let her stay with him.

I couldn’t even begin to tell you what to expect from the chicks, but I’d wager they’ll be a good dual purpose bird in the long run. BCM are my heaviest breed, and the Wyandottes are the best laying.

The hen is one of the BCM hens I wasn’t sure WAS a BCM hen and not an olive egger ( I didn’t separate the chicks when they hatched so it could have been either). She ended up staying in The Hentagon with the Fibro Autumn Eggers. So the eggs from this lot are from BCM hen x Ayam Cemani roosters “AC Slater” and “AC Purple”. Unfortunately I don’t have a pic on hand of this particular BCM hen or “Purple”.

The chicks that spring from these eggs will be quite different from the typical pure breeds. They might be the most beautiful bird on the planet, or they could grow up to be something only a mother could love.

Send me a message on Facebook when you’re ready to order some ODDBALL hatching eggs. I cannot guarantee a full dozen as these are from single hens and not whole pens, but we will get as many as we can in a 4 day gathering window though, and adjust the price as needed.

If you’d like to learn more about these guys and the different pens they live in, check out Our Flocks.
